As far as family friendly hikes go, this one was a no brainer! We absolutely loved our experience doing the Palisade Falls Hike when we were camping at Three Forks KOA near Bozeman Montana. Imagine a day with clear skies, a gentle breeze, and vibrant fall colors. As we drove through the Hyalite Recreation Area on our way to the hike, we were mesmerized by the breathtaking beauty all around us. We could have spent hours driving around just to marvel at the sights. Pulling into the parking lot, we were grateful to see that it was not as crowded as we anticipated, it is known to be a very popular hike. Keahi was eager to get out and start exploring. Thankfully it was a short enough hike that we were able to let him walk for a good portion of the time and when we wanted to pick up the pace he got to ride on Matt’s shoulders. Autumn was also very excited to get out and start exploring, she always loves when our hikes are dog friendly. When we arrived at the end of the paved path, of course we had to keep going. The water was only trickling down the falls so we were able to climb up the rocks and get fairly close. We stayed a while to enjoy the scenery and were kicking ourselves for not packing a picnic lunch.

Details

The path is paved from the parking lot until the waterfall is in view, there are some steep segments which would make it challenging for an unassisted wheelchair. We hiked beyond the path to get a closer view, the rocks were loose and wet so we had to tread carefully. The path was a little over a mile out and back with around 250 foot elevation gain depending on how close you got to the falls.
